April 10-12, 2020

Live Fast, Acro SLO is a different type of festival. Instead of many smaller classes that provide a big sampling, we are offering a weekend of four 3 hour sessions for you to dive deeper into topics and really learn them. Our teachers come from all over the country so you will definitely see someone you don't work with on a regular basis. All sessions will have a Beginner or All Levels class, an Intermediate class and an Advanced Class.

This festival will be capped at 150 participants to keep the space reasonable so sign up now to guarantee your space!

Class Descriptions

Body Activism in Acro

Sarah Parsons + Kasey Topp

Beginner / All Levels

Come play and explore tools for supporting positive body image and thoughtful communication in acro! This class will be divided into two parts: the first half will focus on activities and group discussions around consent and body image in acro. We will work together to create a safe container to discuss these sensitive topics. The second half will consist of a semi-structured jam, where you can bring acro skills you are working on and get personal attention and coaching from the instructors. In this class, we will work together to grow in our acro skills as well as learn how to further support our communities through thoughtful language and practice on the mat.

This class is welcome to all levels! Beginners welcome.

Pre-requisites: an open mind, come to class with acro skills you would like to work on during the jam, an interest in learning and discussing the topic of body image and consent in acro from a collaborative and supportive mindset.

How to not die (a treatise on spotting)

Seth Hunter + Courtney Lynn

Intermediate

Acro is dangerous, but learning how to spot effectively can mitigate some of those risks and make some things more accessible. We’ll talk about what you can do as the base (primary spotter) and what you should look for if someone asks you to spot (secondary spotter). This class is all about how to predict where things are headed, beat them there, and interrupt the flyer before they confront the ground. We will not be teaching machines or acrobatic skills, but we will give you examples of things you can try. It’s up to you to decide what lies within your risk profile. You will fall in this class.

Machine Techniques for Power and Flow

Emily Reuman + Chris Filkins

Advanced

A newly developed machine for you, hot off the presses! Highly dynamic spinning machine, this one will challenge bases' coordination and flyers' fast-paced balancing skills. Emily says, "I haven't had this fun with a machine since Circuit Runner." Chris says, “You betcha!”

Solid Standing Foundations

Jessalyn Oxford & Jon Swann

Beginner / All Levels

Foot to Hand (F2H) and Hand to Hand (H2H) are the cornerstones of a standing Acrobatics practice. In this workshop, we will combine our many years of experience and our varying backgrounds to give you an in-depth exploration of these topics.  We will establish a strong foundation of what’s required for excelling in standing acrobatics - including proven strength and technique drills, effective spotting to keep you safe, and the skills needed to transition between static poses & dynamic transitions. We will also spend time on individual assessment and assist you in correcting common mistakes.

Big Poppa + Strong Flyer = This Class

Reno Gorman and Sean Keehan

Intermediate

Explore a flow of strong flyer moves and transitions that include big pops from the base. Flyers will work hard and fly light. Bases will pop high and catch soft, with some icarian options. There will be variations for moves to be easier or harder, more impressive or more practical. The Handstand Nation is more about fun than training "ethics," so don't take our shit too seriously, or we'll kick you the fuck out of class.

Solidifying & Excelling with Hand-2-Hand

Jonathan Nowacki + Margarett Antill

Advanced

When I first started acro I wasn’t very good. In fact I actually got kicked out of my first workshop with Nathan Price for being “too weak”. So I worked hard, gained 50lbs of muscle and eventually won back to back hand-2-hand competitions at Acrolove, inlocated over 100 people of all shapes and sizes. The tallest being 6’-5” and the heaviest is 230lbs. I’ve put mid-sized fliers in mono hand-2-hand and done cannonballs to 1 arms. None of this came easy, but I have had many excellent coaches along the way. Come learn the drills and techniques that took me from “too weak” to winning competitions.

The Other Class

Leslie + Heather

Beginner / All Levels

A broad range of beginner friendly acro poses and transitions. Come to this class to learn the wonders of acro from two bad ass acroyoginis.

Let's talk about Threeways

Jeremy Estey, Sarah Kim, Danielle Lagana

Intermediate

True trio L-base acro (base, mid, flier) flow. Borrows elements from sports acro and adds fun transitions

Dynamic flipping skills!

Brian and Kina Kincher-Winoto

Advanced

Let’s make use of the foam pit and lines and learn some cool flipping skills. Skills may change based on who shows up but we are planning to teach toe-pitch and toe pitch back tuck. We’ll also warmup with some H2H and Rev H2H drills for corbett and cascade.

Base Flyer Combo Flow

Crystal Nardico

Beginner / All Levels

TBD.

Flashy Dance Lifts

Elisa Rager + Jake McKee

Intermediate

Class will start with solo movements that will give base & flyer the tools needed to accomplish a variety of intermediate dance lifts. These will culminate in a flashy flow that will light up the dance / acro floor.

Acro Like A Cheerleader

Liz Breen-Golan and Zack Cohen

Advanced

Learn the basics of cheer. Learn how to get comfortable with standing foot to hand and spotting standing skills. Work progressions for extended standing F2H and maybe some work on toss skills.

Facility

The festival will be held at Performance Athletics Gym in SLO. This gym features two full sprung floors, a foam pit and various other gymnastics equipment.
